CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Emergency medical officials say one person is dead and one person is seriously injured after a tractor-trailer flipped over on I-77 in Charlotte Monday morning.

The crash happened on I-77 near Woodlawn Road just before noon.

Mecklenburg EMS says one person died on the scene while another person was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol says six vehicles were involved in this crash.

Charlotte Fire Department says I-77 North was completely shut down at Woodlawn Road while I-77 South in the same area was down to one lane.

Just before 5 p.m., all lanes were reported to have been reopened.

Fire officials say drivers should seek an alternate route if possible.

”I think God saved my life,” says Rostislav Kazmirets, who was involved in the crash.

This is all Rostislav Kazimirets could think about as he walks away from this crash that just scrapped the back of his car. Not only thankful for his life but his two kids’ and wife’s as well.

”I tried to save my family because I don’t care about myself,” says Kazmirets.

Kazimirets not wanting to imagine what could have happened if he had not driven forward.

”The two kids start crying and yelling and I look at myself check all my organs to make sure I am ok but I am ok now,” he says.

He is a truck driver himself so he says he’s wasting no time turning this into a lesson for himself.

”It’s a lesson to me that I need to drive careful—car or truck,” he explains.

It is the same lesson Trooper Ray Pierce is passing to all drivers in the wake of the accident as cars were bumper to bumper.

”This is just one of those things you never know what’s going to happen on the interstate. Leave yourself that out,” says Pierce.

As Kazimirets walks back toward the emergency room where his family is getting checked out he is once again looking toward the sky.

”My back hurts. My wife back hurts. I am checking my kids to make sure they’re ok. I am so lucky.”>

Officials have not provided any other information about what happened. Troopers also have not said the name of the person who died, but did say it is a driver.
