Dozens of cars catch fire at Rowan County salvage yard
Thick smoke can be seen for miles and officials say to avoid the area.
CHINA GROVE, N.C. (WBTV) - More than 100 firefighters from three counties battled a large fire at a salvage yard in Rowan County.
The fire was reported at C & D Garage and Salvage Inc in China Grove on Lentz Road. The fire was first reported at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Several cars were burning and firefighters from Rowan, Iredell, and Cabarrus County were on scene. Thick smoke could be seen for miles and officials say to avoid the area.
“I believe right now we’ve probably got close to 150 firefighters, and that’s responding either to location, back filling locations within the county or supplying other resources,” said Allen Cress of Rowan County Emergency Services.
A helicopter from the North Carolina Forestry Service was used to drop water directly onto the burning cars.
“We had a bunch of cars to catch on fire, probably close to 50 or 60,” Cress said.
Cress said that no injuries had been reported. The Rowan County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
